Browns lose to Packers, 31-3

Derek Anderson - Cleveland BrownsThe title of the recap over at ESPN says it all - Rodgers, Pack bully Browns in warm-up for Favre, Vikings.

That’s all the Browns are anymore. They are a warm-up. A game against the Browns for a 3-2 Green Bay team amounts to nothing more than an exhibition game, or a scrimmage in practice. The Browns are awful. Plain and simple.

After scoring first with a field goal in the 2nd quarter, the Browns defense allowed gave up 3 touchdowns to go into halftime trailing 21-3. Things didn’t get any better in the second half. They finished with just 139 total yards of offense, only 58 rushing yards. On the other side, they gave up 460 yards and failed to record a sack against a Packers offensive line that has been all too eager to let defenses get to their quarterback thus far.

Derek Anderson produced another miserable performance - 12 for 29 (41%), 99 yards, 1 interception, 2 fumbles, 36.4 QB rating. Since taking over for Brady Quinn, he is 60 for 137 (43.8%) for 605 yards (4.42 per attempt) with 2 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Now, compare that to Brady Quinn’s numbers for the 10 quarters he was able to play: 45 for 74 (60.8%) for 400 yards (5.41 per attempt) with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Another thing to keep in mind: Quinn started for the team’s first 10 quarters of the season. This was a team that had a new coaching staff and was trying to implement a new offense. Makes this look even more like it’s financially motivated.

So when will Mangini finally bench Anderson? Who knows. Maybe never. Maybe he’s content to allow these awful games from his starting QB. But following next week’s game against Chicago, the Browns have a bye week. Perhaps Mangini will make the change then. One can only hope. I’d like to see Brady Quinn get another shot. But at this point, I wouldn’t care to see Brett Ratliff or Josh Cribbs. Anyone else. Please.
