NFL Week 6 Notes

October 19th, 2009 at 6:04 am by Displaced Cleveland Fan

These are stories from around the league that I thought were worth noting. You can read my recap of the Browns week 6 game here.

Tom Brady - New England PatriotsIn a snowy game with old school uniforms in Foxborough, the New England Patriots demolished the Tennessee Titans 59-0.

I don’t know what the bigger story is - how great the Patriots played, or how awful the Titans are.

First the Patriots (mostly Tom Brady) - They scored 35 points in the 2nd quarter to go into halftime leading 45-0. Tom Brady was 29 for 34 (85.3%) for 380 yards and 6(!) touchdowns. Even when he left the game, backup QB Brian Hoyer was 9 for 11 (81.8%) for 52 yards. Laurence Maroney rushed 16 times for 123 yards (7.7 average) and a touchdown.

For the Oilers Titans - Kerry Collins. 2 for 12 (16.7%) for -7 yards, 1 interception and a 4.9 QB rating. Seriously. They turned the ball over 5 times (3 fumbles, 2 interceptions). There were two positives though. First, they rushed for 193 yards. Not bad. Of course, that’s offset by the -7 yards passing. Second, the offensive line didn’t allow a sack. That’s good, right?

Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints | Eli Manning - New York GiantsThe New York Giants defense faced off against the New Orleans Saints offense in what should have been a good game against two unbeaten teams.

But this wasn’t a good game. The Saints crushed the Giants 48-27.   Drew Brees was 23 for 30 (76.7%) and threw for 369 yards and 4 touchdowns, with a QB rating of 156.8. The team also rushed for 3 touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, Eli Manning was 14 for 31 (45.2%) for 178 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He was also replaced in the 4th quarter by David Carr.

Brett Favre - Minnesota VikingsThis was really the week for the star quarterbacks - first Tom Brady, then Drew Brees, now Brett Favre.

Favre led the Vikings to a 33-31 win over the Ravens yesterday. He was 21 for 29 (72.4%), throwing for 278 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. But most notably, he led his team on a 66 yard drive in the 4th quarter, which included a 58-yard pass, to set up the game-winning field goal.

The Minnesota Vikings are now 6-0.

In the Division:

The Baltimore Ravens came up just short against the Vikings in their 33-31 loss. Sure, Brett Favre drove his team down the field to set up the game winning field goal. But that was necessary because the Ravens scored 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to climb back into the game. They also missed a last second field goal that would have won them the game. A few weeks ago, I thought Baltimore may be the team to beat in the division. Now they’re 3-3 and in 3rd place.

The Cincinnati Bengals had worked themselves into first place by winning some games in the final minutes. But it wasn’t going to happen again this week. They failed to score any points in the second half and lost to Houston 28-17. Cincinnati managed to rush for only 46 yards. Their defense allowed Texans QB Matt Schaub to throw for 392 yards and 4 touchdowns.

In beating the Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers improved to 4-2 and are once again in first place (tied with Cincinnati). The Steelers have beaten the Browns in their last 12 meetings.

Quick hits:

  • There are still four undefeated teams - Minnesota, New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Denver (pending the Monday night game against San Diego).
  • There are three teams that have yet to win a game - Tampa Bay, St. Louis, and Tennessee.
  • After an ugly loss last week to the Browns, Buffalo beat the Jets 16-13 in overtime. They were helped by Mark Sanchez’s 5 interceptions.
  • The Washington Redskins have played their first six games against winless opponents. Unfortunately for them, their easy schedule thus far has only resulted in a 2-4 record.
