Browns lose to Steelers, 27-14

Derek Anderson - Cleveland BrownsOK. No one expected the Browns to beat the Steelers. I don’t know if anyone even thought it would be close.

But here’s the thing - Pittsburgh did not play their best game today. They made some mistakes. If the Browns had a decent team, they might have been able to capitalize on one or two, eliminate a couple of their own, and maybe pull out a win. But no. This Browns team is far from being a decent team.

Pittsburgh turned the ball over 4 times (1 INT, 3 fumbles). Yet Cleveland still lost by 13 points. It would have been even more lopsided had it not been for Josh Cribbs’ 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Other than that, the Browns offense only scored 7 points (which is actually more than I thought they would), but none off of any of Pittsburgh’s 4 turnovers.

While Ben Roethlisberger was throwing for 417 yards and 2 touchdowns, Derek Anderson went 9 for 24 (37.5%) for 122 yards with a touchdown, an interception, and two fumbles.

Look how lopsided the game stats were in favor of the Steelers:

  • Passing yards: 403 to 106
  • Total yards on offense: 543 to 197
  • First downs: 28-12
  • Time of possession: 36:46 to 23:14

I’ll be glad to see the day when the Browns and Steelers actually have a rivalry again. Right now, it’s just bitterness and jealousy because of the Steelers’ continued success and the Browns’ continued mediocrity. In fact, I feel like I’m being charitable by calling the Browns mediocre.

After last week’s 2-17, 23 yard performance from Derek Anderson, I said the Browns ought to start Josh Cribbs at QB. He threw an interception today, indicating that he may be ready to take over for D.A.
