NFL Week 4 Notes

October 5th, 2009 at 6:04 am by Displaced Cleveland Fan

These are stories from around the league that I thought were worth noting. You can read my recap of the Browns week 4 game here.

Peyton Manning - Indianapolis ColtsWho’s the best quarterback in the NFL? Tom Brady? Drew Brees? Eli Manning?

My pick is Peyton Manning. For the past few years, he has been the best QB in the league. Yes, I realize that many will challenge that statement. But if I were able to build a team around a quarterback, any quarterback, it’d be Peyton Manning. Hands down. No question.

This week against the Seahawks, Manning through for 353 yards on 31 of 41 passing (75.6%) and 2 touchdowns. Through four games this season, he’s completed over 70% of his passes, averaged 334 yards a game, and has 9 touchdowns.

He also reached a milestone this week with his 342nd career touchdown pass. This ties his with Fran Tarkenton at third on the NFL’s all time list of most career touchdown passes.

I’m not really a Colts fan. But I do enjoy watching their offense play with Manning under center.

Chris Johnson - Tennessee TitansHow low can the Titans go?

After going 13-3 in the regular season and winning the division last year, the Tennesee Titans are 0-4 to start this season. While their first three games were close, this week’s game against Jacksonville was not. The Titans were trailing 27-3 at halftime and couldn’t muster a come back in the second half.

It doesn’t get much easier for Tennessee in the next two weeks as they have to face Indianapolis and New England. It’s very possible they could go into their Week 7 bye sitting in the bottom of the AFC South at 0-6.

See, Browns fans, it could be worse. We could have expected our team to win some games. The lower the expectations, the less painful the losses are.

In the Division:

With the win over the Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals are tied for first place at 3-1. Who would have ever thought that would be true at this point in the season?

The Baltimore Ravens came close to beating the Patriots in New England, but came short thanks to a dropped pass. They lost 27-21. They’re tied with Cincinnati for first place at 3-1.

The Pittsburgh Steelers beat San Diego on Sunday night to improve to 2-2. They jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and held off the Chargers comeback attempt to win 38-28.

Quick hits:

  • Teams left undefeated: Indianpolis, Denver (what?), New Orleans, New York Giants, and Minnesota (pending the Monday night game against Green Bay).
  • Teams still winless: Cleveland, Kansas City, Tennessee (hehe), St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Carolina.
  • Mark Sanchez came back down to earth this week, throwing for just 138 yards and turning the ball over four times (3 interceptions, 1 fumble).
