Mangini Was Looking for Something Different in the Final Preseason Game

Eric Mangini - Cleveland BrownsApparently, the list of things I wanted to see in the Browns’ final preseason game was vastly different than that of head coach Eric Mangini.

I wanted to see a clear starting QB emerge. Brett Ratliff got the start. Neither Brady Quinn nor Derek Anderson played.

I wanted to see a focused Braylon Edwards playing like a legitimate #1 WR. He too did not play.

I wanted to see a solid running game. The team’s leading rusher was Chris Jennings.

I wanted to see Shaun Rogers on the field. He wasn’t even in uniform.

So the game was played by the backups and those trying to make the final 53-man roster. Apparently Mangini has seen enough to make his decisions about the starters and was using this game to help determine what players would round out the final roster. I can’t say that’s a bad idea. Hopefully his assumptions about the starters are right.

Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson - Cleveland BrownsBut the big question that has yet to be answered: Who will be under center when the Browns kick off the ‘09 season against Minnesota?

I’m thinking it’s got to be Quinn. He’s had a slight edge in this preseason over Anderson. And I believe he has a much higher potential than DA.  But who knows? Maybe Mangini doesn’t even know. But the sooner he decides, the better.

9 days till Game 1.
