Derek Anderson Will Start Sunday

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Eric Mangini announced today that Derek Anderson will start with Sunday against Cincinnati.

*grumble. grumble. grumble*

I haven’t seen the news conference. Honestly, I have no desire to. But I did see the Cleveland Browns twitter updates. This is what Mangini said about his decision via @OfficialBrowns:

Mangini: “I think Derek did some positive things and I think he can help us improve offensively. That’s what the decision is based on.”

Really? Anderson did so many positive things that we’ve forgotten the three interceptions in one half? That’s an improvement?

Ohio State back in the Top-10

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Lawrence Wilson, Kurt Coleman - Ohio State BuckeyesFollowing Saturday’s 30-0 win over Illinois, the Buckeyes are back in the top-10.

Thanks to the upsets of four top-10 teams, Ohio State jumped four spots to #9. Ole Miss dropped from #4 to #21. Penn State slipped from #5 to #15. California, after getting pummeled by Oregon, fell from #6 all the way to #24. Miami, after jumping 11 spots to #9 the previous week, went back down to #17 this week.

Iowa is now ranked #13 after beating Penn State. Not sure yet if they really belong this high or if Penn State was overrated. Either way, the Hawkeyes will get their chance to prove themselves as the season moves on.

Another Ohio team is in the top-10. Cincinnati is right behind the Buckeyes at #10.

NFL Week 3 Notes

Monday, September 28th, 2009

These are stories from around the league that I thought were worth noting. You can read my recap of the Browns week 3 game here.

Mark Sanchez - New York JetsEric Mangini’s former team, the New York Jets, improved to 3-0 after beating the Tennessee Titans 24-17.

According to ESPN, Rookie QB Mark Sanchez (the one the Browns could have taken in the draft, had they not traded down) became the first rookie QB to start and win his first three games.

Meanwhile, the Browns have Mangini yanking Brady Quinn out of the game after the first half in favor of a 3 interception performance by backup Derek Anderson. Just for fun, let’s compare the stats from these two QB’s:

Derek Anderson - Cleveland BrownsSomebody please, make it stop!

Just in case you were tempted to think that the Browns season couldn’t get any worse in week 3, here it is. See that picture? That’s Derek Anderson. Remember him? Sure you do. And look what he’s wearing. A helmet. You know why? He played today. No joke. What happened to Brady Quinn? Mangini benched him in favor of Anderson. Yeah, you read that right.

Dan Herron - Ohio State BuckeyesThe Buckeyes opened their Big Ten schedule at home against Illinois by beating the Illini 30-0.

A rainy first half finished with Ohio State leading 13-0. The Buckeyes had zero passing yards for the half. But they were able to move the ball effectively on the ground. They rushed for 236 yards in the game, led by Brandon Saine (81 yards) and Dan Herron (75 yards and 2 TDs).

Bowling Green Hot Rods Moving to Midwest League in 2010

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Bowling Green Hot RodsSaw the news tonight on Twitter that the Bowling Green Hot Rods are joining the Midwest League in 2010.

The Hot Rods played their inaugural season in the South Atlantic League. They finished in last place in the Southern division with a 64-74 record.

They were 2-1 in games where the wife and I were able to watch them at the ballpark. (Maybe that means we should try to go to more games this year.)
