Ohio State beats Michigan, 42-7
November 22nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm by Displaced Cleveland FanWhat a way to finish off the regular season.
With the win…
- The Buckeyes clinch at least a share of the Big Ten title.
- They win their 5th straight game against Michigan.
- Beat them by 35 points - the largest margin of victory over the Wolverines since 1968.
- And they help cap off the Michigan’s worst season. Ever.
Chris “Beanie” Wells rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown. Dan Herron added 80 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Buckeyes as a team rushed for 232 yards, and gained 416 total yards of offense (compared to Michigan’s 198).
It doesn’t look like Rich Rodriguez gets it. Here he is, finishing up his first year as head coach at Michigan. His team has been awful, overall. They’re 3-8 coming into this game - already the most losses by a Michigan team in their 100+ year history. They even lost at home to Toledo.
There is only one thing that could halfway salvage this season for the Wolverines and their fans - beat Ohio State in Columbus, ending the Buckeyes’ hope of another Big Ten title and possible BCS bowl game. The Buckeyes have beaten Michigan the previous 4 years. A win for the 19 point underdog Wolverines would be huge.
But what happens? Ohio State embarrasses Michigan, beating them by 35 points. If there is ever a game that you get your team fired up about, it’s this one. But it didn’t happen. Maybe next year, Michigan. But looking at your abysmal season, I doubt you’ll be back next year.
So the win assured Ohio State at least a share of the Big Ten title. A Penn State loss would mean an outright title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. But the Nittany Lions beat the Spartans 49-18. So now the Buckeyes will have to see which bowl game they’ll be playing in.
And Michigan, their season is over. No bowl game for them. First time that happened in 34 years. 3-9 just doesn’t cut it.

I’m so glad to know that Beanie has a “real” name! What parent would name a kid Beanie???
I’m glad OSU’s senior quarterback got in to play for part of the last half/quarter. (Sorry, I was sleeping through most of it!)
Did you get to actually WATCH the game?

No, ABC aired the Tennessee-Vanderbilt game here instead.
