Ohio State loses to Penn State, 13-6
October 25th, 2008 at 10:36 pm by Displaced Cleveland FanThe nation can rest easy tonight.
It is no secret that the Buckeyes are one of the most unpopular teams in college football. After two national championship losses, the country dreaded the thought that Ohio State could be back in the title game for a third straight year.
Then came the 35-3 loss on September 13 to USC. Things looked promising for everyone who is not an Ohio State fan. But the Buckeyes would not go away. After getting Chris Wells back and inserting Terrelle Pryor into the starting QB spot, the team won 5 in a row coming into a showdown with #3 Penn State. A win would put Ohio State right in the hunt.
Unfortunately, the Buckeyes fell short tonight against the Nittany Lions. The defense looked good, holding a Penn State team that had come in averaging more than 45 points a game to just 13. The offense had a rough time most of the game. They put together a few good drives. But Penn State’s defense was awfully good. Ohio State managed to score just two field goals.
Terrelle Pryor had a chance to lead another last minute scoring drive to tie the game, like he did against Wisconsin to win. But he was intercepted in the endzone to end all hope of that.
So barring a catastrophic final month for the top 15 or so teams, the Buckeyes will not be in the national championship game this year. (College football fans around the country are rejoicing.) Right now their best shot is at the Rose Bowl, which still isn’t all that bad.
It would have been great though, had the Buckeyes won tonight and worked their way into either the #1 or #2 spot by the end of the season to play for the national championship. Obviously it would be nice to see Ohio State play for the national title. But it would have been hilarious to listen to all the angry fans around the country that the Buckeyes were back.
Ohio State will be back. Just not this year.
