Browns lose to Redskins, 14-11

Back to reality.

That 35-14 win over the Giants last week that had Derek Anderson throwing for 300+ yards and 2 TDs, Braylon Edwards totally 154 receiving yards, and had Romeo Crennel “earning” Coach of the Week honors… that was a fluke. The real Cleveland Browns were back today against the Redskins.

The game wasn’t televised here so I didn’t get to watch or record it. So except for some video highlights, all I’ve got is the box score. Here’s what stood out to me:

  • The defense looked like they did fairly well. They held Washington scoreless in the first half. They gave up two touchdowns in the second half, but Washington’s a good team. Our defense kept us in the game.
  • Through the first 57 minutes of the game, the Browns offense managed to score just 3 points. What happened to their play in the Monday Night game?
  • Derek Anderson completed just 14 out of 37 passes (38%) for 136 yards.
  • Braylon Edwards caught 4 passes for 58 yards. The box score doesn’t say how many passes he dropped though.

How long is this going to go on? The defense is playing better than expected. It’s the offense that’s losing games. Something’s got to change.

Obviously, the biggest change the offense can make is at QB. Derek Anderson is certainly not the only one to blame for the mediocre play. But he is the one who is the head of the offense. And he also has a first round pick, franchise QB-type backup behind him. It’s time for Brady Quinn to take over.

And Romeo, your days are numbered too. Your job is to get these guys to play consistently at the level they are capable of playing. So far that’s only happened one game this year. Time is running out.

Let’s see what, if anything, changes for next week’s game against Jacksonville.
